Title: Physical security in system security: taking into account vulnerabilities and opportunities
Location: D012 and Zoom (https://grenoble-inp.zoom.us/j/3488730581, Meeting ID: 348 873 0581, Passcode: 144791)
Abstract
Microelectronic components in systems can both introduce security flaws and offer highly optimized security opportunities. In this presentation, we will discuss how these threats and opportunities can be better taken into account during system design, integration, and validation.
Firstly, we will see how, during the design of an integrated circuit, it is possible to consider classical material attacks (fault-based attacks, hidden channel attacks...) to integrate security elements efficiently. We will show that similar methods can be derived to take into account the effects of these attacks on software executing on a given target and secure it.
Secondly, we will focus on the security opportunities offered by the physical target and more particularly the challenges faced by system designers to best exploit these opportunities through two examples: non-clonable physical functions and integrated security elements in processors. Non-clonable physical functions offer highly interesting security opportunities for generating authentication data, although their integration and exploitation in systems are still costly. We will show how deep learning-based techniques can facilitate their use.
If system designers on chip integrate many security mechanisms to secure the execution of software, their good exploitation at the system level is not always guaranteed. It is thus necessary to develop systematic approaches allowing for their integration.
Finally, we will conclude this talk by briefly discussing some perspectives on these works.
